It’s time for week 2 of my favorite signings from each round of the 2023 MLB Draft. This week, we’ll take a look at what I think are the best signings from rounds 11 thru 15. As we get closer to the earlier rounds, we have more and more players who signed with the team that drafted them. These middle rounds had some great players to choose from, and a few of which I think could make an impact in the big leagues at some point.
I’ll start to include current stats as we get deeper into this series, as players will start to accumulate a decent sample size. I’ll also include their current level at the time of writing this, hopefully without too much movement between writing and posting.
Round 15: Will Simpson, University of Washington, Oakland A’s
First up on this week’s edition is UW’s Will Simpson. Some other guys I was considering were Tre Richardson from TCU and Jordan Thompson from LSU but I had to put my recency bias aside for this round. Simpson played all over the field for Washington last year playing DH, RF and first base. Simpson earn Pac-12 honors in 2023 and ranks fourth in Washington history with 36 career home runs.
What I liked from looking at the charts is that at the end of the day, Will Simpson can do a little bit of everything. He can play multiple positions, he can hit to multiple parts of the field and he can do so with power as well. I think Simpson will keep himself in pro ball for a decent amount of time because of his versatility and the A’s are well aware of this.
