Alex Ramirez, OF 19 y/o, R/R, 6' 3" / 170 - Mets (A)
Ramirez has laid waste to low-A pitching and it’s only a matter of time before the Mets promote him to high-A to see how he handles more of a challenge. So far across 137 plate appearances this season, he's slashed .362/.394/.562 (wRC+ 175) with 3 HR and 2 SB. Ramirez is repeating low-A, where he spent all of last season as an 18-year-old and hit .258/.326/.384 (96 wRC+).
The area where Ramirez has struggled the most is his approach at the plate. Although he’s kept his strikeouts down this season (20%) compared to last (31%), his free-swinging ways may get him into trouble as he progresses to higher levels against better pitching. For example, Ramirez has chased 45% of pitches outside the zone, which is among the highest in the FSL. So far he’s been able to maintain success despite such a high chase rate. This is mostly because he’s been able to make contact at a league average level (~75%) — but as he progresses it will be more and more difficult to get by with this approach. As he moves to A+ and beyond his strikeout rate may increase if he doesn’t improve his plate discipline.
