Prospect promotions, spotlight on Ryan Vilade of the Rockies, Jasson Dominguez continues his strong May, the Pirates call up Cal Mitchell, and notable performances from yesterday
Good morning!
Player of the Day
Jasson Dominguez (19), CF #56 - (A) NYY - 2-2, HR, BB, HBP
Dominguez is arguably having his best month as a professional ballplayer. Since May 1st, he’s slashing .299/.382/.567 (171 wRC+) with 3 homers, 7 doubles, and 1 triple. He’s also continued to show the big time swing and miss that’s been the concern early on in his career — he’s struck out 25 times in 67 plate appearances since 5/1. He’s now slashing an above-average .261/.315/.442 (118 wRC+) on the season (coming into yesterday), but expectations remain high for the tooled out Dominguez and I’m not sure that type of production will be enough to satisfy Yankees fans. The tools and massive power are there, but Dominguez’s approach at the plate still needs a lot of work. For example, although he was among the FSL leaders in barrel% (barrels per batted-ball), he’s also high up on the list when it comes to chasing pitches out of the zone (31%) and swinging and missing (17%). Dominguez is still just 19-years-old, but his tools will only take him so far if he can’t refine his approach at the plate.
