Down on the Farm’s Origin

Even after Major League Baseball reduced the number of affiliates for each organization, there's still more minor league baseball everyday than one can possibly consume. I’ve always thought it would be useful to have a daily briefing covering everything that happened the previous day around the minor leagues. On top of that, I’ve always wanted data in an easily digestible form that allowed me to quickly stay up-to-date on the progress of all the top prospects. What players have taken a step forward? Which ones are injured or struggling? This is the reason Down on the Farm was started -- initially as a way to keep myself informed, but eventually as a way to help keep everyone else informed too.

Blaze Jordan (19) - BOS (A) 3B/1B, R/R, 6' 2"/ 220 - 3-5, 2 HR, K

Blaze Jordan went 3-5 yesterday with two home runs (5, 6) for Low-A Salem. The 19-year-old corner infielder has slashed .291/.343/.467 (118 wRC+) across 248 plate appearances this season including .383/.441/.633 over 68 trips to the plate in the month of June. Jordan was taken by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2020 draft out of Southaven, Mississippi. As an amateur his calling card was his power, but in his short professional career Jordan has shown a better hit tool than many expected. Despite an above-average swinging strike rate of 15%, he’s managed to maintain a reasonable strike out rate of 17%. If the Red Sox decide to be aggressive and Jordan continues to show he can handle Low-A pitching, he’ll likely get a promotion to High-A at some point in the near future.
