Draft week rolls on…today we look at the NL West. But first…
What MLB organizations have drafted the highest percentage of high school players?
Since 2019, the Rangers and Red Sox are the only clubs that have drafted high school players at a rate above 30%. The Nationals, Astros, and Tigers have selected the lowest percentage of prep players since 2010.
How about a more recent sample of drafts and only including the early rounds? Since 2015, only including the 1st through 5th round, the rate goes up for most teams. This make sense of course, if a club is going to draft a high school player and entice them with enough money to forego a college commitment they usually select them in the earlier rounds. The Rangers still have the highest percentage of any team by a large margin, but the Angels, Rays, and Marlins jump up the list by quite a bit.
