Dodgers prospect Diego Cartaya (A+) went 2-3 yesterday with a pair of homers. The 20-year-old catcher is now slashing .273/.408/.545 with 17 home runs across 326 plate appearances in both Low-A and High-A this season. Francisco Álvarez (NYM), considered by some to be the top prospect in baseball, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning last night to help Syracuse (AAA) beat Omaha 5-3. The 20-year-old catcher is now hitting .259/.367/.527 with 20 home runs on the season, but has hit just .146/.362/.366 since being promoted to Triple-A. Álvarez’s strike out rate has ticked up a bit since the promotion (29%), but he’s also walked in over 22% of his plate appearances. In a doubleheader for the Somerset Patriots (AA) yesterday, Anthony Volpe (NYY) went 4-8 with two home runs and double. After a bit of a slow start to the season, the New Jersey native has been on a tear lately, slashing .328/.436/.656 in July with five homers and seven stolen bases.
