Victor Scott II gets sent down to Triple-A

Prior to Sunday’s game, the Cardinals optioned Victor Scott to Triple-A Memphis, wrapping up a disappointing Major League debut where he hit just .085 with no homers and 15 strike outs in 69 plate appearances. This poor showing does not change my long term view on him much however. Victor Scott was added to the Opening Day roster at the very last second due to injuries, and was getting put into big league action despite never playing above Double-A, which is a massive jump. His impressive Spring Training gave hope that he would able to transition smoothly into a major league role with no Triple-A experience, but Scott never really looked comfortable, and clearly needs more time to develop. In my Prospect Spotlight piece on Scott, I noted there was elevated bust risk due to his lack of power, but again, I don’t think this showing makes me feel more strongly about him busting that I did heading into the year. Hopefully he is able to regain confidence and get back to the majors soon.

I chose Cam Collier as my breakout prospect for this year, and he has rewarded me so far by hitting .328 with 6 homers to start the year. Four of those homers came this past week against Fort Wayne, including a two homer game on Wednesday, and one off of a curveball that Dylan Lesko hung on Saturday. His plate discipline numbers are a bit odd — he’s only walked twice while striking out 12 times — but the power he showed last year was underwhelming and was something I wanted to see more out of from him this year. It looks like we are starting to see that now.
