Today’s Prospect Spotlight shines on a player who has changed quite a bit over the last three seasons. After signing out of Venezuela in 2017, Brayan Rocchio has emerged as one of the Guardians’ most solid prospects, and projects to end up a big-league contributor in the next 12-18 months. However, the switch-hitting middle infielder is dealing with a couple of shifts that may end up impacting his overall value to his franchise.
After spending most of the 2020 layoff building his strength at home in Venezuela, Rocchio emerged as a force in 2021 on the strength of an impressive boost in power, something that was a bit unexpected from his 5’10” frame. Between Lake County (High-A) and Akron (Double-A), he slugged 15 home runs and broke into the top-100 prospects discussion. And in 2022, he continued to hit for power with 18 more homers, even as he made it all the way to Triple-A Columbus at the age of just 21.
