A closer look at the Brewers potential future centerfielder and one of the top prospects in the game
Prospect Spotlight 🔦
Jackson Chourio CF – Age: 19 – B/T: R/R, 5’11’’ 165 – Brewers (Double-A)
Born: 3/11/2004, Maracaibo, Venezuela
Acquired: IFA 2021
While it’s not as crazy to see a star prospect pushed through the minors at a young age anymore, what Jackson Chourio has accomplished so far in his young career is impressive. Signed in 2021 by the Brewers for a $1.9MM bonus, Chourio has quickly risen through the Brewers minor league levels, and is now seen by most evaluators as the top prospect in their system. Although he started the season off slowly, he’s had an outstanding second half and put together an impressive overall slash line at Double-A — .276/.329/.467 — all while being just 19-years-old. Chourio has also hit 22 home runs while stealing 41 bases. Power hitting centerfielders are hard to come by, especially ones that possesses so many other above-average tools.
While on the higher end of signing bonuses given out to international free agents in the 2021 period, not many expected Chourio to burst onto the scene like he did during the 2022 season. Last year, he played at three different levels (his Double-A experience was more of a cup of coffee), hitting .288/.342/.538 with 25 home runs and 22 stolen bases overall. Although this is an impressive slash line anywhere, it’s important to note that he was playing in hitter friendly ball parks and his 27% strikeout rate indicated some hit tool risk. In 2023, he was assigned to Double-A and started out rather slow.
