Happy New Year! It’s another Friday which means we get to look at more minor league players who have signed over the past week. As always, we are listing players whose signings have been made official via the transaction wire. Let’s dive into what was a relatively quiet week of signings.
December 28
The Padres signed former Guardians outfielder Óscar Mercado to a minor league deal. Mercado, 29, played 31 games for the Padres Triple-A squad last season but spent the majority of his time with the St. Louis Cardinals. He played in 34 games with the Triple-A Redbirds and 20 with the major league club. Mercado will compete for a roster spot in spring training thanks to the holes left following the Juan Soto and Trent Grisham trade.
December 29
The Padres signed left-handed pitcher Daniel Camarena. Camarena briefly appeared in the majors for the Padres back in 2021 and missed all of 2022 because of injury. Last year he threw 69.2 innings for San Diego’s Double-A affiliate, allowing a 6.20 ERA with 54 strikeouts.
