If you haven’t seen Triston Casas in the box, the first thing you’ll notice is that he’s a very large human being. The former 1st round pick out of Florida has hit at every stop in the minor leagues and if he hadn’t hurt his ankle in May he would likely be playing in Fenway right now instead of Worcester (AAA). Here’s what Alex Cora recently said about a possible Casas promotion:
“He hasn’t played enough this year, he didn’t play enough last year. He went to Team USA to the Olympic qualifier, then he went to the Olympics. It’s part of player development. Yeah, the numbers look great, but there are a few things he still needs to get better at. I’m not saying or ruling out that he won’t be here, but as of now he’s not an option.”
“We want him to get repetitions at that level, keep getting better and keep progressing. He’s going to be a big leaguer. When? I can’t tell you. It might be in 10 days, it might be in three days or it might be next year. But we’re very happy with the progress, and there are still a few things he needs to get better at.”
Cora is right, the numbers do look great. After missing nearly two months with the aforementioned ankle injury, Casas has hit .308 / .422 / .541 (155 wRC+) with a 16% walk rate and 20% strikeout rate since his return to the field. Overall, Casas has slashed .270 / .383 / .480 (127 wRC+) with 10 home runs and 20 doubles in 300 Triple-A plate appearances this season. He’s struck out 65 times (22%) and walked 46 times (15%), which is consistent with his performance from 2021. Most public projections see Casas as an above-average hitter in the big leagues right now, Steamer pegging him at a 114 wRC+.
