Under the Radar Prospects: Giants
The Giants are the subjects of this week’s installment of Under the Radar Prospects
The San Francisco Giants are the subjects of this week’s installment of Under the Radar Prospects, in which five players from a team’s system are selected as players to keep an eye on. Among the five players this week is a pitcher with an interesting arsenal, a toolsy utility player, a teenager that scorched the DSL, and two hurlers dominating their respective leagues.
Quinn McDaniel, INF/OF - San Francisco Giants
Thus far in his pro career, Quinn McDaniel has displayed an interesting blend of speed and power with the ability to get on base. It’s these tools that stood out during the draft combine and help aid the Giants decision to select McDaniel in the 5th round of the 2023 draft. During his first taste as a professional in 2023, McDaniel hit .258/.424/.495 with 6 HR over 125 plate appearances; McDaniel maintained an impressive 22.4 BB% over those trips to the plate. However, McDaniel’s K% surged when promoted to Single-A and hasn’t settled since his move to High-A.
McDaniel has played in 41 games this season at High-A and is hitting .250/.376/.359 with 3 HR and 16 stolen bases; McDaniel has a 15.3 BB% and 32.1 K%, but also a 121 wRC+ over 190 plate appearances. The 21-year old McDaniel is capable of playing most positions. Thus far in 2024, McDaniel has spent the majority of his time at second base, but also a fair amount of time in center field.
Angel Guzman, OF - San Francisco Giants
The Giants picked up Angel Guzman during the 2023 international signing period. The outfielder was 17-years-old for the entire duration of the 2023 season, which he spent in the Dominican Summer League. During the campaign, Guzman hit .257/.392/.450 with four homers over 171 plate appearances — Guzman also had a 18.7 K% & 15.8 BB%. Guzman doesn’t have any one tool that jumps out at you and isn’t an especially projectable athlete, but what he does have is a hitterish feel in the box and a knack for barreling the baseball. The now 18-year-old Guzman has yet to make his stateside debut and is reportedly in extended spring training.
