Under the Radar Prospects: Rockies
The Colorado Rockies are the focus of this week’s installment of Under the Radar Prospects
Although the Rockies’ system doesn’t possess many high-end prospects or much depth, it still contains several interesting players who have a chance to contribute at the big league level in late 2024 or early 2025. Among those that we’ve featured today are four players that will be in spring training with the big league club, including one player that was selected to the 40-man roster this past November.
Zach Agnos, RHP - Colorado Rockies
23-year-old right-hander Zach Agnos was a talented two-way player in college that may have been better on the offensive side of things. Nonetheless, the Colorado Rockies selected Agnos in the 10th round of the 2022 draft as a pure reliever. After pitching in just one game in 2022, Agnos made his full season debut this past year and although his pitch repertoire rates as average, he posted some of the best numbers of any hurler in the Rockies system. Appearing in 47 games at Single-A, Agnos compiled a 2.06 ERA | 3.47 FIP with a 30.8 K% and 5.9 BB% and led all of minor league baseball in total saves (27). Agnos’s 24.9 K-BB% and 16.2 whiff percentage were second best in the Rockies system. Meanwhile, his opponent average of .196 was the top mark for Rockies pitchers.
Angel Chivilli, RHP - Colorado Rockies
Only one pitcher in the Rockies organization had a higher whiff rate in 2023 than Zach Agnos and that was 21-year old Angel Chivilli. Chivilli, who was originally signed during the 2018 international signing period, has a heater that sits in the upper 90s and a wipeout slider. Although he projects as a pure reliever, he has a chance to be in the Rockies bullpen picture by early 2025.
Chivilli has been a project that the Rockies have been taking their time with — he didn’t pitch state side until 2022, but Colorado’s patience seems to be paying off. During the 2023 season, Chivilli maintained a 18.6 whiff% over 61 innings pitched between High-A and Double-A. Despite the ability to routinely produce whiffs, the overall results for Chivilli have not been great — he posted a 4.79 FIP and .273 opponent batting average since the start of 2022. Despite the results, the Rockies clearly like his stuff and decided to add Chivilli to their 40-man roster this past November.
